Organic
Organic is when the artist puts their music fist. The term is used to describe bands where they make the kind of music that they want to make, and then the record labels try and sell this music to the correct market segment if they are a signed band.

Organic music often appeals to a niche, but can appeal to a mass audience too.
One good example of an organic band is The Beatles. With the Beatles, they started off as two people, and started creating covers of Elvis Presley. And then Paul McCartney came along and they turned into The Beatles. The music comes first with The Beatles, and they created their own music before they got record labels.
Another good example of an organic band is Nirvana, who are a grunge band. They created their own music and even hough grunge was not popular in their day, they stuck to their music because that was what they loved doing. Then, after Nirvana, grunge music became more popular and people started listening to it more.
Synthetic
The term synthetic refers to the 'XFactor' methodology, and it is the record labels that sit in the driving seat.
A gap in the market is identified, and then it is exploited by the development of music, and often the artist, to suit this gap.
Money is the ultimate goal in this operation. Acts such as 'One Direction' are a good example of manufactured artists.

Another good example of a synthetic artist is the monkees. The american record label based The Monkees off of the Beatles, and exploited their talent. They created a TV programme in which the monkees were brought together, they had not known each other before the show, and this was all created for a financial gain.
