Jamie Thraves

Jamie Thraves

Jamie Thraves is a British film writer and director. He started making short, experimental films when he studied at Hull University. His graduation films both won numerous awards at a short film festival, and Jamie got his first breakthrough for his video for Radiohead - Just. The narrative of the video is about a man lying down with many people surrounding him, and what the man said at the end of the video to make the people lie down with him created great debates amongst fans years afterwards. Just like many other directors in the business, Jamie Thraves' livelihood is dependant on each commission. He began his career by shooting three very low budget music videos which costed about £5000 each. One of Jamie's main talents include making the music video into mini films, which grab the audience's attention and keep them watching for they will want to find out what happened at the end, such as his video for Coldplay - The Scientist.
Thrave gave tips on how to make successful music videos. He said to use the lyrics but not be too literal with them, and most importantly, go with the emotion of the lyrics. He wants the audience to connect with the lyrics, and so an effective video would do just that.

Radiohead - Just

Radiohead - "Just" was Jamie Thraves' breakthrough into his music career. It had a £100,000 budget and he directed and shot this video in just three days. This music video was created to fit the idea of a mini film, The video shows Radiohead performing in a flat, and this scene is amplified throughout the video. Subtitles are used throughout the video showing the conversation between the characters. The main plot of the music video is a man who is walking down the street, and suddenly he stops and lies down on the pavement with no apparent reason. Then, a man comes along and trips over him. He questions why the man is lying on the ground yet all the man lying on the ground says is that he just wants to be left alone. However, the man questioning him is curious about his actions, and so he stays with the man, asking questions, until a larger crowd appears. The crowd are all questioning him but he still doesn't give an answer, he just continues to tell them that he wants to be left alone. The man repeats to the crowd that they really do not want to know why he is lying on the ground. This creates an enigma for the audience as they will be wondering why this man is lying on the ground, and they would want an answer for it. However, the audience never find out the answer to this question for when the man finally agrees to tell the crowd why he is lying on the ground, the subtitles vanish, and so we do not know what the man said. Whatever the man said must have been effective though, for the camera zooms out, presenting the whole crowd lying down on the floor around the man. This music video is a good use of an open text for it has an ambiguous ending. Many different interpretations have come about this video. Jamie Thraves uses many different techniques throughout this video; he uses close ups of the man lying down to show his facial expressions and his emotions. The video is effective to the audience for it goes back to Andrew Goodwin's theory as the lyrics do not match the storyline of the video, which could be quite confusing to the audience.

Coldplay - The Scientist

.Coldplay - The Scientist was another of Jamie Thraves' many successful videos. This video has a large budget of £200,000 and Jamie spent three days filming and directing it. This video has a very enticing storyline, and the audience would be intrigued to watch to the end to find out where the story behind the song is created. The video presents the singer of Coldplay lying down singing the lyrics of the song, like Andrew Goodwin's theory which believes that the lyrics should agree with the visuals in the video. However, unlike other music videos, this video was created to be the singer literally going back to the start, like the lyrics of the song. Whilst he is singing the song normally, his actions are put in reverse, and if so, then it would have been difficult for the singer to sing the song backwards to create that effect. The audience begins to understand what had led him to the beginning of the video, and then they find out that the video was leading the audience to an extreme car accident, in which the girl in the car was presented on the floor, unfortunately dead. This would be quite effective for the audience as it would be unexpected, and they will understand the sorrow and guilt of the singer. The editing of the video is very slow, which matches up to the pace of the music.

Death Cab for a Cutie - I Will Follow You Into The Dark

Death Cab for a Cutie - I Will Follow You Into The Dark is a great video by Jamie Thraves. It was created by the lead singer of the band, Ben Gibbard, who had never lost anyone in his life, yet he had become obsessing over death and the afterlife, The video features Ben Gibbard in a small and plainly decorated bedroom, playing the song whilst sitting on his bed when he becomes aware of a small hole in the wooden floor. He continues to go about his life normally as if nothing was wrong, avoiding the constantly increasing hole. One shot was inside the deep hole looking up at Gibbard, and the music is softly playing, sounding far away. Towards the end of the video, it presents him sleeping in bed, and eventually rolling out of bed into the hole. He tries to hold on and pull himself up into safety, however, he falls, and it shoots to him falling into pure blackness. When he stands up, the audience assumes that the hole is not that deep, for Gibbard looks close to his room above, however, when the lyrics match up to the video and Gibbard walks into the dark, the darkness takes over and presents just how far away the room is from him. At the end, the camera pans, showing the entire room has changed back to its original, intact state. One thing about this video which really intrigued me and kept catching my eye was that throughout the video, there were brilliantly subtle hints of a circular hole in Gibbards everyday life, such as a circular mirror which he looks in, a close up shot of the hole in the middle of his guitar, and in the beginning of the song, the video is made to seem as though it is inside his guitar in the dark, looking out of the hole into the light. All of these little hints could suggest that the hole was unavoidable to Gibbard, and he was always going to follow into the dark.

Tom Odell - Another Love

Jamie Thraves also created Tom Odell's video for Another Love. This video presents an individual's wish to show their affection to their love, yet they feel burdened by their lingering feelings of distrust and hurt from their previous relationship. The video starts off dark, with Tom Odell's face in the middle of the screen, slowly moving backwards, presenting the room Odell is sitting in. The actress in the video shows affection to Odell, however, he ignores her, and doesn't look at her throughout the video. Through the instrumental parts of the video, the mise-en-scene and the actress' costume changes to present the time going by. The actress in the video becomes more and more aggressive as the video proceeds, linking to the lyrics of the song. Odell's facial expressions and the change of lighting presents his distress and hurt from the former love, and when it ends, it shows Odell alone, suggesting that the girl left him. The camera does not move position throughout the video, although it uses different shots, the camera is always in the same place, directly facing Tom Odell, and also, similar shots are used throughout this video, such as close ups, medium shots and medium long shots, which would make sure the main focus for the audience is on the lyrics and Odell himself. Thraves follows his own tips in this video, for he uses the lyrics but does not take them too literal, and so the video is simple but very effective and the audience can easily get the meaning from the video.

Title: One Day – Kendall Mackie

Tag Line:

Synopsis:
Our song is about a break up between a couple, and so we are using a narrative to get our idea through. We are using three different locations, a train station, a studio and a park. We are also going to use a non-linear narrative throughout the video, for it starts at the end, and it uses flashbacks throughout the video.

Key Genre Conventions:
Some key conventions of music videos are close ups, and our video is going to be slightly country based, and so our costumes are going to be stereotypical for that genre. The lyrics of our song will influence what will be in our music video, and the mise-en-scene will represent the mood of the song and narrative throughout our video.

Lyrics to One Day

One Day

You're taking me for granted,
but you're the first thing on my mind.
Im tired of your excuses,
but i could never tell you a lie.
Try a little harder, even half as hard as i try
to win you over.

Bring me closer to you.
Show me what you want me to do.

One day you will see
you'll never find a girl like me.
One day you will see
we were always meant to be.
One day you will see
what it feels like to be me.

When i miss you,
when i kiss you,
when i'm with you
One day you will see.

You never show your emotions,
but i always let you in.
You're afraid of commitment.
I'm sick of being on and off again.
You gotta make your mind up.
Tell me what its gonna take,
to win you over.

Bring me closer to you.
Show me what you want me to do.

One day you will see
you'll never find a girl like me.
One day you will see
we were always meant to be.
One day you will see
what it feels like to be me.

When i miss you,
when i kiss you,
when i'm with you
One day you will see.

Ive waited here for so long.
For you to show your face or atleast call.
Cant you see that we belong?
Why cant we be together?

One day you will see
you'll never find a girl like me.

One day you will see
you'll never find a girl like me.
One day you will see
we were always meant to be.
One day you will see
what it feels like to be me.

When i miss you,
when i kiss you,
when i'm with you.

One day you will see
you'll never find a girl like me.
One day you will see
we were always meant to be.
One day you will see
what it feels like to be me.

When i miss you,
when i kiss you,
when i'm with you

When i miss you,
when i kiss you,
when i'm with you

When i miss you,
when i kiss you,
when i'm with you

One day you will see.

Contacting The Artist

After we found a song for our music video, we sent an email to the artist to ask permission for the song for our music video. We used YouTube to contact her for it was the social media that she was recently active on.

Chosen track

Potential tracks

This is a potential track for we thought it could be a good narrative video and the story behind it would be quite compelling for audiences, for it is about her moving on from her partner who left her, and so a few ideas we could use in this would be flashbacks and studio scenes. The flashbacks could show positive and negative scenes of their relationship, which would connect to the lyrics for she repeats it was the best thing to happen to her, and that she is moving on. The beat of the song is quite slow yet it has a good rhythm and so it would be possible to edit the video to the beat of the song.

We are considering this song for it is catchy and it has a nice rhythm to it, which could be good for editing. We are considering a narrative based video, and the video may go along the lines of McFly,s video, Love Is Easy, which uses props to visualise the lyrics. This is quite an imaginative idea, and it is not very usual so it could work in our favour. The props we could use for this song could be a fish on a line for the lyric "she fell for you like a fish on a line." Also, this is a cute love song, and so the mood would have to be happy and the editing should be upbeat, to the beat, and we would also need to sync up the props in the video and where they are presented in the lyrics.

This song is one of our possible tracks for there are many ideas we could create for it. It is called Garden, and so the colour green would be a paramount theme throughout the video. We would also have a scene with a long-shot of the girl walking through the forest, gazing up at the trees as she passed, lip-syncing the lyrics to the song. Another idea we thought could be quite good for this music video was a scene from Paramore- The Only Exception, where Hayley Williams is lying down on love letters, with an angled shot directly above her, looking down on her. We could incorporate this scene into our video and have her lying on the grass, looking up at the camera. This song is very catchy and upbeat, and so it would catch the audience's attention and work to our advantage.

We are considering this video for it is very upbeat and we could edit to the beat of the song which would be effective and create many fast paced shots.

How Pop Videos Can Be Used To Create A Brand

Pop videos have many purposes, such as advertisement, creating a brand, illustrating the song, appealing to a visual audience, expressing an individual's emotions, telling a story and marketing an image. Often, artists are sold as a brand and the music video acts as a product of the brand, in the hopes that the audience will be persuaded to buy into the brand. Synthetic artists, such as the Spice Girls, believe that their image was of more importance than the product they were trying to sell. However, organic artists believe that the song and the meaning of the song is more important, and the artist's image has little to do with the sales.

The Spice Girls

In the mid-1990's, Bob Herbert, Lindsay Casbon and Chris Herbert set about to create a popular girl-group to compete with popular boy bands which dominated the music industry in the mid to late-1990's, such as Boyzone and Backstreet Boys. In February 1994, Heart Management placed an advertisement in 'The Stage' trade magazine, trying to call out to the music audience, asking " WANTED. R U 18-23 with the ability to sing and dance? R U streetwise, outgoing, ambitious and dedicated?" After hundreds of auditions, Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton and Melanie Chisholm were chosen, and they formed the Spice Girls, as a carefully selected group of strangers, although the industry sold the group to the audience to make the audience believe that they were just a group of friends goofing around and creating top-selling singles together.

However, as the Spice Girls believed their image was of utmost importance rather than their songs, their clothes were carefully chosen for their appearance on the American Television. Each Spice Girl was given a nickname, which became their trade mark. Victoria Beckham was "Posh Spice," and when appearing on American Television, she wore a sophisticated, slinky and graceful black number, Emma Bunton was "Baby Spice," and she was known for her innocent, sweet style and she wore a baby pink dress. Mel C was known as "Sporty Spice," and she had a tomboy style. She wore her favourite Liverpool shirt when on American television. Mel B was known as "Scary Spice," and she sported leopard-skin trousers. Geri Halliwell, "Ginger Spice," would wear red hot pants, top and bra.

Everything about the spice girls, including their nicknames, scary/posh/baby etc, was all under the control of men or corporations. Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) almost didnt make it into the group for she looked older than the other girls. However, when asked how old she was, she stated "I'm as old as you want me to be. I'll be 10 with big boobs if you want." The group had endless merchandising and sponsorship deals, and they were involved in everything, ranging from Pepsi Ads to Polaroid Ads to actual Barbie-style Spice Girl Dolls.

Spice Up Your Life

This song and music video is basically the Spice Girls persuading the audience to have the Spice Girls in their life. They are promoting positivity and creating the message that if you listen to Spice Girls and you stick with them then your life will have positivity and that "when you're feeling sad and low," the Spice Girls will help, with "every boy and every girl."

Wannabe

This single really displayed the group's brand. The music video presents the group as really good friends and the audience can see the bond between the group. The lyrics of the song suggest that the group is trying to spread a message to their audience; to stick with your friends. This song helped attract a massive female audience for they sing about how "if you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends," and "friendship never ends."

Comparing Two Artists

To many artists, their image is the most important part of their career. Their own style makes them unique and stand out from other artists. Lady Gaga is a perfect example of a artist who's image is more important than her brand and she is also an artist who is presented under Laura Mulvey's theory of the male gaze. The male gaze is present throughout her videos for she wears quite revealing clothing and her dances are very sexual. In 'Bad Romance,' Gaga is dancing in front of a crowd of men, wearing bra covered with diamonds, and at one point, she sits on one of the men's laps and sings "I want your love." This use of Gaga exploiting her sexuality shows that she cares more for her image and how she is perceived by her audience than her actual music, as she is known for her crazy behaviour and costumes.

Adele, however, is a perfect example of an organic artist. She is different to Lady Gaga for she believes her music to be more important than her image. As Adele is not the typical image for the music industry, her sexuality is not exploited throughout her videos, and so her music is very important for her success. Her focus on her product rather than her image creates a difference between her and artists who are more preoccupied with their image, such as Lady Gaga, and it creates a unique selling point for there are a lack of mainstream artists who focus primarily on their product.
Adele's music videos are quite simple, and it allows the audience to focus on the lyrics rather than being distracted by a fancy video.
