Styles Of Music Videos

There are many different styles of music videos which are:

  • Narrative
  • Cinematic
  • Studio-based
  • Intertextuality
  • Parody
  • Pastiche
  • Animation
  • As live
Narrative

Narrative is when the storyline progresses through the video. Sometimes the artist will not be included in the music video. Cyndi Lauper: Girls Just Want To Have Fun is a good example of a Narrative music video.

Cinematic

Cinematic is usually compared to a mini film. It normally has high productive values and it makes good use of cinematography and mise-en-scene. Black Chandelier by Biffy Clyro is a good example of a cinematic video for its use of cinematography and mise-en-scene.

Studio

A studio-based music video is normally filmed in just one location and does not use any other locations in the music video. McFly's Love Is On The Radio is based in a blue studio room and the video is only set in that room.

Intertextuality

Intertextuality is when the music video includes other texts but it does not make fun of them. Red Hot Chili Peppers use a video game of themselves in this video to present intertextuality.

Parody

A parody music video involved changing or copying ideas from a music video and incorporating them in their own  music video in a humorous and satire way.
Shania Twain's Man I Feel Like A Woman takes Robert Palmer's Addicted To Love to a whole new level, mocking it in a humourous way.

Pastiche

Pastiche is the genre of music which works with another time frame/genre. This music video, Mr Brightside, includes old fashion mise-en-scene.

Animation

Animation is when the music videos use animation to make the video. Queens Of The Stone Age use animation in their music video, Go With The Flow.

As Live

As Live is when the musiv video is a live performance of the band. Biffy Clyro's Sounds Like Balloons is a video of all of the different videos that the fans took of their tour collaborated together.
